The National Music Council produced 5 films in the late 1960’s and 1970’s. These provide a valuable insight into music making in the UK at that time.
These films are :
“Music in Scotland” (1974) and “Music in Wales” (1982) on 16mm © James Archbold.
“Music!” (1968), “Festival” (1974) and “Rehearsal” (1974) on 35mm © NMC.
James Archbold had been Chair of the NMC and died in the Summer of 1983.
The film “Music!” is of exceptional interest due to the inclusion of a unique 5 minute extract of the Beatles rehearsing “Hey Jude” in Abbey Road Studios. It also includes scenes with Ewan MacColl & Peggy Seeger, Johnny Dankworth and broadcaster Tony Blackburn
Much of the Film “Festival” was filmed in and around London’s South Bank Centre when it was new.
They provide a fascinating insight into the culture of music performance and creation at that time, across genres.
